Joe "Truth" Parker was born & raised in Northern New Jersey to a young, single and struggling mother.
As a child, Truth quickly became a product of his environment, learning the importance of how to fend for himself.
As many others around him, the infamous "Brick City" with all its glitz & Glam, poverty, drugs, crime, & hardship, surrounded him and produced experiences that would later on shape his life into what it would eventually become.
At age 7, his mother married an abusive NJ State Trooper. At age 9, while regularly suffering, emotional and mental abuse at the hand of his step father, he would ultimately witness the brutal execution of his mother, and after be sent to live with his grandparents & alcoholic father in the neighboring town of East Orange.
While not much different than Newark, in East Orange, he quickly adopted a rebellious and destructive lifestyle charachterized by wtolen cars, using and dealing drugs, drinking, fighting, carrying weapons, and harboring hatred for all authority figures.
As a early teen, he helped in forming a neighborhood gang that became notoriously well known throughout the city for "all the wrong reasons". This was long before the Bloods & Crips ran rampant thru those same streets.
After several run ins with "the law" and being suspended numerous times and ultimately expelled from highschool, his grandparents decided to make the transition from NJ to Virginia in hopes of finding a fresh new lifestyle and environment. It just so happens that Richmond, VA at that time was known as the "Murder Capitol" of the country and his "transition" actually propelled him knee deep into the drugs and gun trade instead.
Keeping his ties and relationships strong back home, Truth quickly found himself routinely travelling I-95, transporting guns, money, and drugs back and fourth to and from Virgina to the NY/NJ area, profiting heavily in the process. By the age of 19, he had amassed half a million in cash.
As a major player in the underworld there, Truth became a high ranking member of a NY/NJ based drug cartel operating in Richmond. It was there that he would befriend the man who would eventually land him in prison.
After a few near death experiences and the birth of his children, then witnessing his best friend get murdered in a shootout stemming from a drug/turf war with a group of locals, Truth had come to think it may be a good time to "hang it up" and change his life.
While possessing strong musical talent and DJ skills paired with a business mind and entrepreneurial spirit nurtured from his years of hustling, Truth was able to make a temporary escape from the street lifestyle and use his natural talents to create and advance his career by becoming a business owner.
Nationally recognized by the moniker "DJ4sho" (arguably the most recognized mixtape DJ to EVER represent VA), and becoming an owner of several business establishments (Music stores, barbershops, beauty salon, restaurant, clothing boutique, recording studio, and record label), receiving several nominations for and winning multiple awards for his craft, making appearances in all the biggest hiphop magazines, websites, & blogs of the time, along with rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the business, Truth ultimately separated himself from the streets completely and focused on growing his success as a DJ and entrepreneur.
While all appeared to be quiet and Truth though himself finally able to relax and enjoyi the "fruits of his labor" his crriminal past abruptly came back to haunt him. He ultimately became a "scapegoat" for his old partner from the drug cartel that he was a member of years prior; resulting in him being indicted and charged with multiple drug offenses, several cold case murders, gun charges, and other crimes temming from the life he was no longer a part of.
In accepting a plea agreement offer to only some of the charges he was indicted for, under circumstances that protected people close to him, some of Truth's charges were dismissed while other were non- processed. In total, Truth was given a sentence of 40 years with half suspended.
While in the confines of the Dept. of Corrections, his entrepreneurial spirit has still emerged through various endeavors over the years behind prison walls.
While serving his sentence, he has successfully completed numerous prison educational programs and with the assistance of a few trusted friends and family members, he has been able to involve himself in several Real Estate "rehab" development projects, Stock trading, foreign currency exchange, musical production management, a clothing line, books, and his latest venture, creating & developing his very own podcast, with accompanying website & social channels, to showcase & highlight his life stories, ideas, opinions, amazing success and redemption stories of others, and detailed accounts of his life in the streets and what it is now while behind bars.
Although many of these are pure horror stories for most, they are very much 100% all true and should serve as a deterrent for anyone aspiring to live a similar lifestyle or may be headed down the same or similar path. Truth's focus these days is about mentoring youth and others, spreading awareness of what life is really like behind bars, and keeping folks OUT OF PRISON.
